This week the president of the United States took time – he must have had nothing better to do – to attack MSNBC’s Morning Joe co-hosts Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski, tweeting:
“I heard poorly rated @Morning_Joe speaks badly of me (don’t watch anymore). Then how come low I.Q. Crazy Mika, along with Psycho Joe, came … to Mar-a-Lago 3 nights in a row around New Year’s Eve, and insisted on joining me. She was bleeding badly from a face-lift. I said no!”
I say Yes. I say it’s time for America to say NO to Donald Trump.
I remember, too, when Trump responded to tough questioning by Megyn Kelly of Fox News by commenting that she had “blood coming out of her wherever.”
When will Republicans and “The Base” say enough is enough – when will they recognize that they’ve been betrayed – that the promise of making “America Great Again” was built on such vulgarities, delusions and deceptions?
I imagine never.
And this man they follow – who’s obsessed with blood, who has no understanding about its meaning, about its cost to America, to humanity – continues to devalue this nation and the promises of our Founding Fathers.
Today, in the face of such obsession, we must resist.
Trump has managed, in fewer than six months, to turn the seat of power into an offal office, a place where daily President Trump, assisted by Steve Bannon, Jared Kushner, Reince Priebus and assorted sycophants and lackeys, wades through depths of slime and entrails shredding our Declaration of Independence, our Constitution – and our collective dignity.
Narcissist Trump, driven by his dangerously uninformed, self-centered world-view, is enabled to abuse the nation by politicians who care more about power and profit than about inalienable rights, by populists and nativists who care more about white privilege and prejudice than about justice and equity.
On July 2, 1776 the Second Continental Congress approved a resolution of independence declaring the United States independent from Great Britain, a decision affirmed two days later, on July 4th, by the adoption of the Declaration of Independence, an unique aspirational statement asserting the primacy and dignity of human rights for all of humanity:
“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”
Those are the truths for which true Americans have sacrificed their blood. Those are the truths for which patriots have fought, at home and abroad, for over two hundred forty years.
That sentence, the second in the Declaration of Independence, is the moral and ethical standard to which our Founding Fathers believed Americans must be held. Today, however, in the Age of Trump, we’re being confronted by forces who’re actively attempting to shred that document and to devalues the sacrifice of patriots.
Tell me, you who voted Trump, are you proud when those forces devalue American blood?
When they vote to deny health care to millions of Americans – are you proud?
When families are ripped apart by deporting hard-working, law-abiding immigrants, immigrants who risked all to follow the promise of America to welcome your “tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free” – are you proud?
Tell me, you who voted Trump, what do you tell your husbands, sons, fathers – your your wives, daughters, mothers?
Do you tell them that the Muslim Ban separates grandmothers and grandfathers from grandchildren – separates blood relatives?
Do you tell them, too, that LGBTQIA relatives – of any faith – have no rights, no humanity?
Do you tell them our children’s blood is being spilled by the unequal application of the understanding that all men have “certain unalienable Rights.”
Do you tell them that we continue to spill blood in wars across the globe, both disregarding “collateral damage” and, through arrogance and recklessness, putting more American blood and assets at risk.
What do you tell them about blood being spilled by inciting hatred and acts of violence against minorities; against immigrants, against African-American and Muslim communities – about valuing the blood of some faiths above others?
How much blood will be spilled in the service of forces who want to end protections for pure air, water, and food? How much blood will be spilled when parts of the earth become uninhabitable and mass migration takes place across the globe?
Do you think sycophants, pillagers, war profiteers and lackeys will be repentant?
It’s we who are called to resist.
We who know blood.
Donald Trump and his followers don’t know blood. An administration built in service to a misogynist, to a man fearful of women and their menstrual cycles, is an administration to be feared, not worshipped.
An administration built on pitting haves against have-nots, built on exclusion rather than inclusion, on fear rather than promise, is an administration to be feared.
This weekend, as you watch the rockets red glare and bombs bursting in air, will you be proud?
You who voted for him – are you still so proud?
